The fiscal year 2023 marked a historic milestone for the Ministry of Defence, witnessing defense exports soar to an all-time high, surpassing the previous year by almost Rs 3,000 crore. Simultaneously, defense production breached the monumental figure of Rs one lakh crore for the first time.
Global Demand and Aatmanirbharta Drive Progress
The global demand for Indian defense offerings experienced a remarkable upswing in 2023. Notably, the LCA-Tejas, light combat helicopters, aircraft carriers, and other defense assets garnered substantial attention on the international stage. At the core of this surge was the government commitment to "Aatmanirbharta" (self-reliance), driving Armed Forces modernization, robust border infrastructure, leveraging Nari Shakti, and ensuring the welfare of Ex-Servicemen.
Record-Breaking Exports and Indigenous Innovation
According to the Defence Ministry, defense exports skyrocketed to approximately Rs 16,000 crore in the Financial Year 2022-23, exhibiting a remarkable tenfold increase since 2016-17. With exports now spanning over 85 countries, more than 100 Indian firms are actively contributing to the global defense market, showcasing prowess in design and development. Key exports include Dornier-228, Advanced Towed Artillery Guns, Brahmos and Akash Missile Systems, Radars, Simulators, and various other cutting-edge defense technologies.
Positive Indigenisation and Policy Reforms
The release of the Fifth Positive Indigenisation List by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, featuring 98 items, underscores the commitment to procuring highly complex systems, sensors, weapons, and ammunition from indigenous sources. The government policy reforms, fostering ease of doing business, integration of MSMEs and start-ups into the supply chain, and a significant increase in defense capital procurement for domestic industries (75% in FY 2023-24), further strengthen India position in defense production.
Infrastructural Advancements and Prime Minister Aerial Endeavors
In a momentous event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Helicopter Factory in Tumakuru, Karnataka, marking India largest helicopter manufacturing facility. Additionally, the Prime Minister historic sortie in the "Tejas" twin-seater light combat fighter aircraft showcased India strides in aviation technology.
C-295 Induction and Strategic Approvals
The formal induction of the C-295 MW transport aircraft into the Indian Air Force, manufactured in collaboration with Tata Advanced Systems Limited and Airbus Defence and Space S.A., signals a significant step towards modernizing India air fleet. Meanwhile, the Defence Acquisition Council approval of proposals exceeding Rs 3.50 lakh crore emphasizes the government commitment to enhancing the operational preparedness of the Armed Forces.

The year 2023 witnessed groundbreaking achievements in Siachen, the world highest battlefield, as Captain Shiva Chauhan and Captain Geetika Koul became the first women officers to be operationally deployed and serve as a medical officer, respectively. The government commitment to gender neutrality is evident in the ongoing induction of women officers in the Regiment of Artillery.
