Unidentified Gunmen Kill Nine Pakistani Workers in Iran's Border Region

Defense News ,Pakistan & Iran :- In a disturbing incident on Saturday, unidentified gunmen attacked and killed nine Pakistani workers in the Sirkan neighborhood of Saravan city, located in the restive Sistan-Baluchistan province along the southeastern border of Iran. The victims, reported to be non-Iranians, were residing at an auto repair shop where they worked, as stated by the Baluch rights group Haalvash. Three others were injured in the attack.

The Mehr news agency quoted witnesses, confirming that armed men carried out the assault in the context of persistent unrest in the region involving cross-border drug-smuggling gangs, Baluchi rebels, and jihadists. The province of Sistan-Baluchistan, predominantly Sunni Muslim in a Shiite-dominated Iran, has been a hotspot for such tensions.

No group or individuals have claimed responsibility for the deadly attack, adding to the complexity of the situation. This incident follows recent military actions in the porous border region of Baluchistan, contributing to the already heightened regional tensions fueled by the Israel-Hamas war.

Iran's state media identified the victims only as foreign nationals and emphasized that no individual or group has claimed responsibility for the shootings in Saravan. The Pakistani Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the incident, expressing horror and emphasizing the need for an immediate investigation.

The attack comes in the wake of tit-for-tat attacks between Pakistan and Iran. On January 18, Pakistan launched air strikes on "militant targets" in Iran, responding to Iranian strikes on its territory two days prior. Tehran claimed to have targeted Jaish al-Adl, a jihadist group blacklisted by Iran as a "terrorist" organization. The repercussions of these incidents have strained diplomatic relations between the two nations, leading to the recall of ambassadors and heightened tensions.
