Ukraine's Zelenskyy says Russia can be Stopped but Kyiv Badly needs more Air Defense Systems
Defense News ,Russia & Ukraine War :- President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently visited the Baltic nations seeking support for Ukraine against Russia's ongoing invasion. Speaking in Vilnius, Lithuania, he highlighted the need to strengthen Ukraine's air defenses amid intensified missile and drone attacks from Russia. Zelenskyy expressed that despite challenges, Ukraine has demonstrated that Russia's military can be halted.
The recent barrage of more than 500 drones and missiles has depleted Ukraine's weapon stockpiles. Zelenskyy acknowledged the scarcity of modern air defense systems and emphasized the urgent need for them. He mentioned the difficulties in obtaining supplies due to low stockpiles in potential donor countries.
To address the situation, Ukraine aims to accelerate its domestic defense industry and collaborate with foreign governments for joint arms production. During Zelenskyy's visit, cooperation agreements on joint arms production were signed, and more are expected in other Baltic countries he plans to visit.
Lithuania has committed support by sending ammunition, generators, and detonation systems to Ukraine this month, with armored personnel carriers to follow in February. The country has approved 200 million euros in aid for Kyiv.
Zelenskyy's trip focuses on security concerns, Ukraine's aspirations to join the European Union and NATO, and building partnerships in drone production and electronic warfare capacities. The Baltic nations, having experienced their own history of annexation, are strong supporters of Ukraine.
Estonian President Alar Karis emphasized the need for democratic countries to unite against aggression and expressed hope that this conflict would be the last military aggression in Europe.
Zelenskyy thanked the Baltic nations for their unwavering support over the past decade, acknowledging their backing since Russia's aggression in 2014. The recent escalation of missile and drone attacks by Russia poses a significant challenge to Ukraine's air defense resources.
Zelenskyy's diplomatic efforts have been crucial in maintaining international support for Ukraine. Despite challenges, Ukraine continues its attempts to defend itself while facing obstacles in receiving aid, with a U.S. plan stuck in Congress and Europe falling short on its artillery shells pledge.
The situation remains tense, with Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, recently targeted by Russian S-300 missiles. While buildings were damaged, no casualties were reported. In response, Ukraine continues its efforts to target locations within Russia, leading to the downing of a Ukrainian drone by Russian air defenses.
As Ukraine strives for resilience, international support remains pivotal in countering Russia's aggression and securing the necessary resources for defense.
