Ukraine Enhances Defense with Second Thales Air Defence System With Ground Master 200 Radar

Ukraine acquires a second Thales air defence system, including the advanced Ground Master 200 radar, to bolster its national security.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Defence has signed a contract for a second comprehensive Thales air defence system. This agreement, supported by the French Ministry of the Armed Forces, aims to enhance Ukraine's defense capabilities against aerial threats.

The new system includes the ControlMaster 200 (CM200), which features the Ground Master 200 (GM200) air surveillance radar, a sophisticated radio communications setup, the ControlView air defence command-and-control center, and portable weapon allocation terminals. These components collectively offer robust short-range air defense from Very Short Range Air Defence (VSHORAD) up to Extended Short Range Air Defence (E-SHORAD).

Key Features of the System:

  • ControlMaster 200 (CM200): Integrates multiple defense components, ensuring seamless operation and coordination.
  • Ground Master 200 Radar: Capable of detecting and tracking targets at varying altitudes, the GM200 radar enhances situational awareness by establishing tracks faster and maintaining them longer.
  • ControlView Command and Control: This system evaluates threats and coordinates responses, ensuring timely and accurate engagement of air targets.
  • Radio Communications System: Facilitates secure and reliable communication between various components of the defense system.

Proven Battlefield Performance

The decision to acquire a second Thales air defence system follows the successful deployment and proven effectiveness of the first system delivered in 2023. The existing system has demonstrated its capability in protecting both civilian populations and military forces by detecting and neutralizing threats early.

Strategic Integration

Thales, Europe’s leading integrator of air defense systems, excels in creating compatible solutions that work efficiently with existing defense infrastructure. This capability ensures rapid deployment and effective integration, crucial for enhancing Ukraine’s defense readiness.

Enhanced Protection

The addition of this second system will significantly boost Ukraine’s air defense, providing early detection and robust response to aerial threats. Hervé Dammann, Executive Vice-President of Land and Air Systems at Thales, stated, "This second air defence system will strengthen the protection of Ukrainian territory, enabling early detection of existing threats. Thales is proud to put its expertise at the service of Ukraine’s protection."

By integrating advanced detection and response technologies, Ukraine continues to fortify its national defense, ensuring greater security and stability amid ongoing threats.
