Ukraine Conducts Complex Cyber Operation Against Russia

Ukraine Main Intelligence Directorate has executed a sophisticated cyber operation against Russia amid their ongoing conflict, targeting Moscow Federal Air Transport Agency. In a significant development, the operation successfully obtained a substantial volume of classified official documents related to civil aviation in Russia.

According to Ukrainian intelligence officials, these documents reveal alarming information about the state of civil aviation in Russia. Over the first nine months of 2023, more than 150 cases of technical malfunctions in aircraft were documented, posing an increased risk to air travel within the country. Notably, issues with engines and landing gear emerged as the most critical concerns.

Among the aircraft mentioned in the obtained documents, the Sukhoi Superjet 100 stood out with 34 reported technical problems within an 18-month period. The intelligence directorate findings suggest that Russia is grappling with significant challenges in servicing aircraft with long flight hours, exacerbated by a shortage of specialists.

One striking revelation from the documents is the reported lack of spare parts, leading to a phenomenon known as "aircraft cannibalism" in Russia. This involves dismantling some aircraft for repairs to sustain others due to the scarcity of necessary components. Additionally, the intelligence report disclosed that Russia is frequently transferring aircraft to Iran for maintenance due to the shortage of specialists.

Ukraine contends that Russia civil aviation sector is on the brink of collapse, attributing a part of the crisis to the sanctions imposed against Moscow. The evidence obtained underscores the severity of the situation, indicating that many of Russia Soviet An-2 aircraft are now grounded because their engines, produced in Poland, are unavailable due to sanctions.
