US Shoots Down 12 "Iran-Backed" Houthi Attack Drones, 5 Missiles in Red Sea

Defense News ,U.S Red Sea :- In a recent development, the United States reported that it successfully intercepted twelve attack drones and five missiles, allegedly launched by the Iran-backed Houthi rebels. The incident occurred in the Southern Red Sea, where U.S. assets, including the USS Laboon (DDG 58) and F/A-18 Super Hornets from the Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group, neutralized the threats over a 10-hour period beginning at approximately 6:30 a.m. (Sanaa time) on December 26.

According to the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), there were no reported injuries or damage to ships in the area. The USS Laboon, a guided-missile destroyer, and F-18 fighter jets were deployed as part of a U.S.-led coalition aiming to safeguard shipping lanes from potential Houthi attacks in the strategically significant Bab el-Mandeb strait.

This announcement follows a statement from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), claiming to have downed a "hostile aerial target" heading toward Israel. The IDF air traffic control closely monitored the incoming threat, which the Iran-backed Houthis later claimed was in solidarity with Gaza.

IDF Spokesman Rear Adm Daniel Hagari labeled the attacks as "acts of terror" directed by Iran, asserting that they were carried out under Iranian directives. The IDF released footage of the interception off Egypt Sinai Peninsula coast, where witnesses reported seeing an object fall into the Gulf of Aqaba near Dahab.

Reports from Egyptian media, including Al Qahera News television with links to state intelligence, indicated hearing blasts approximately two kilometers from the Egyptian seaside town of Dahab, south of Eilat. Despite the proximity, no casualties or damage were reported. Al-Arabiya footage captured the aerial interception.

The Houthis, in response, claimed responsibility for a missile strike on the vessel MSC UNITED and the launch of drones at southern Israel. Its worth noting that Yemen Houthis have previously executed several drone and missile attacks on Israel, with most being successfully intercepted.

These incidents occur against the backdrop of the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, which began on October 7. The conflict erupted when thousands of Hamas terrorists crossed the border, resulting in the loss of lives on both sides. The Houthis, in their claim of solidarity with Gaza, reported a staggering number of casualties, citing over 20,900 deaths.

The situation remains tense, with regional actors closely monitoring developments as the complex geopolitical dynamics in the Middle East continue to unfold.
