U.S. Plans $400 Million Military Support for Ukraine

Defense News ,U.S ,Ukraine :- The United States is getting ready to provide Ukraine with new military help, and it could be worth up to $400 million. This comes after a pause in additional funds for Ukraine, as Republican leaders in Congress were not approving them.

Two unnamed U.S. officials shared this information on Tuesday, and they are expected to make an official announcement soon. The money for this support comes from refunds given back to the Pentagon for recent purchases.

The U.S. Army has been buying a lot of weapons and vehicles to replace what they sent to Ukraine. The last time they received funds for this was in December 2023, and since then, they ran out of money to restock.

By using the refunded credits, there's a small opportunity to quickly send more aid from the existing stock while waiting for additional funding from lawmakers.

President Joe Biden supports helping Ukraine militarily since Russia's big invasion in 2022. His likely opponent in the upcoming election, former President Donald Trump, has a more isolated approach.

The House is under pressure to pass a $95 billion national security package that supports Ukraine, Israel, and the Indo-Pacific. Although the Senate approved it with a 70-29 vote, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson has been hesitant to put the aid bill up for a vote.

U.S. intelligence agencies are urging the House of Representatives to approve more military assistance for Ukraine, stating that it would not only help Kyiv against Russia but also discourage Chinese aggression.

On Monday, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy mentioned that the situation in the country's war with Russia was the best it had been in three months. He noted that Moscow's troops stopped advancing after capturing the eastern city of Avdiivka last month.

Zelenskiy explained that Ukraine has improved its strategic position, even with shortages of weaponry. However, he warned that the situation could change if new supplies did not arrive. Russia's capture of Avdiivka gave them some relief in defending the Russian-held regional center of Donetsk.
