The US Marines Corps is taking a leap forward in battlefield technology with the acquisition of loitering munition systems from Teledyne FLIR. This marks a significant development in the Organic Precision Fires-Light (OPF-L) program, designed to equip dismounted infantry rifle squads with next-generation weaponry.

What are Loitering Munitions ?

Loitering munitions, also known as suicide drones, are small, aerial weapons that can fly around an area until a target is identified or designated. They then swoop in and detonate on impact, offering precise strike capability beyond the line of sight. Compared to traditional weaponry, loitering munitions provide several advantages:

• Increased Precision:  These weapons minimize collateral damage by allowing for targeted engagement.
• Rapid Response:  Loitering munitions can be deployed quickly to respond to emerging threats.
• Squad-Level Deployment:  The compact size and ease of use make them suitable for integration into small unit tactics.

Equipping Marines for the Future Battlefield

The initial contract of $12 million represents the first step in this program. Teledyne FLIR will deliver 127 loitering munition systems for assessments scheduled this summer. The gathered data will be crucial for refining the technology before full-scale production commences.
