US Firm Hermeus Unveils Jet-Powered Quarterhorse Mk1 Drone
Defense News ,U.S :- Hermeus, a US-based aerospace firm, has introduced a new jet-powered drone called the Quarterhorse Mk1. This remotely-piloted aircraft is equipped with a GE J85 engine, similar to those found in supersonic fighters and jet trainers. The company boasts that it can be designed and constructed within a mere seven months, aligning with their goal of producing one aircraft annually.
Scheduled for its inaugural flight test later this year at Edwards Air Force Base in California, the Quarterhorse Mk1 will undergo rigorous testing of its subsystems and ground station prior to takeoff. Hermeus Vice President, Don Kaderbek, emphasizes the importance of evaluating the aircraft's performance and safety protocols during this process.
While specific details regarding operational speed, range, and flight endurance remain undisclosed, Hermeus already has plans for the Quarterhorse Mk2. This upgraded version will feature the Pratt & Whitney F100 engine, allowing for supersonic flight capabilities akin to those of US Air Force jets.
Skyler Shuford, co-founder of Hermeus, expresses the company's commitment to swift innovation, aiming to deliver enhanced capabilities to customers promptly. By sidestepping lengthy development timelines, Hermeus intends to deliver the right aircraft for the present moment, ensuring efficient production and deployment within less than a year.
