US Approves $214 Million for AMRAAM Missiles and Small Bombs to Italy

Defense News ,U.S ,Italy :- The US State Department recently gave the green light to Italy's request for air-to-air missiles and small bombs, totaling $214 million.

Italy sought 12 AIM-120C-8 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM) for $69.3 million. Manufactured by RTX, these missiles are designed to enhance the aerial combat capabilities of the Italian Armed Forces in response to increased regional tensions. They are compatible with Italy's F-35 and F-16 fighter jets.

The approved contract not only includes the AMRAAMs but also covers AMRAAM containers, support equipment, spare parts, and various support services. This move is aimed at strengthening Italy's ability to face current and future threats by providing modern and capable air-to-air munitions.

Simultaneously, Italy is set to receive 125 Small Diameter Bombs (SDB) – Increment II as part of a proposed $150 million agreement. These bombs will be integrated into the F-35s operated by the Italian Air Force and Navy.

According to the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency, this sale contributes to improving the security of a crucial NATO ally, playing a significant role in political stability and economic progress in Europe. It also promotes enhanced interoperability between the US and NATO and strengthens collaboration with the Italian Armed Forces.

RTX, the manufacturer of both the AMRAAMs and SDBs, will serve as the prime contractor for the agreements. The contract encompasses the delivery of SDB weapon load crew trainers, spare parts, and necessary munitions support services, ensuring Italy can seamlessly integrate these enhancements into its armed forces.
