UN Provoke India with their Statement On Arvind Kejriwal’s Arrest
Defense News ,India ,UN :- The United Nations (UN) wants to make sure that everyone in India, and in any other country holding elections, has their rights protected, especially their civil and political rights. They hope that everyone can freely and fairly vote without any interference.
Stephane Dujarric, who speaks for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, talked about this on Thursday during a press briefing. He was responding to a question about the unrest in Indian politics, particularly regarding the upcoming national elections. This unrest follows the arrest of Delhi's Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal, and the freezing of the opposition Congress Party's bank accounts.
Dujarric emphasized the importance of protecting everyone's rights, ensuring a fair and transparent atmosphere for voting. He stressed that this should be the case not just in India but in any country holding elections.
This statement from the UN comes after the United States also commented on similar issues regarding Kejriwal's arrest and the Congress party's bank accounts being frozen.
On the day before, India had summoned a senior US diplomat to protest remarks made about Kejriwal's arrest. In response, the US reiterated its stance on promoting fair and transparent legal processes.
When asked about the summoning of the US diplomat in Delhi, Matthew Miller, a spokesperson for the US State Department, stated that they support fair legal processes and transparency. He emphasized that such processes should not face objection, both publicly and in private discussions.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in India called Acting Deputy Chief of Mission Gloria Berbena to discuss the matter further. This meeting took place in South Block, New Delhi, and lasted for more than 30 minutes.
India responded to the recent remarks from the US State Department, calling them "unwarranted". They emphasized the country's commitment to its independent and robust democratic institutions, pledging to safeguard them from external influences.
Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the MEA, declared any external interference in India's electoral and legal processes as unacceptable. He reassured that India's legal procedures operate solely under the rule of law.
Earlier, the MEA had strongly objected to comments made by the US State Department regarding certain legal proceedings in India. They reaffirmed the independence of India's judiciary and criticized any doubts cast upon it.
The arrest of Arvind Kejriwal by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case linked to the excise policy 'scam' has fueled these controversies. The case involves allegations of corruption and money laundering related to the formulation and execution of Delhi government's excise policy for 2021-22, which was later scrapped.
In essence, both the UN and the US are closely monitoring India's political landscape, urging for the protection of civil rights and fair legal processes, especially during the upcoming elections. India, on its part, asserts its commitment to democracy and independence in its judicial system, rejecting any external interference or criticism.
