Turkey Successfully Completes Maiden Flight of ANKA-3 Unmanned Aerial Vehicle
Defense News , Turkey :- Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) has reached a significant milestone with the triumphant maiden flight of its cutting-edge ANKA-3 unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The event, eagerly anticipated and widely followed on social media, unfolded as ANKA-3 gracefully soared into the skies for a 70-minute flight, attaining an altitude of 8,000 feet and cruising at 150 knots.
Distinguished by its stealthy "flying wing" and tailless structure, the ANKA-3 innovative design minimizes detection by early warning systems, though it does not possess direct air combat capabilities. The inaugural flight, commencing at 08:38, was accompanied by the HÜRKUŞ Basic Training Aircraft and another ANKA UAV, showcasing TAI prowess in developing advanced air platforms utilizing domestic resources.
Originally unveiled on the runway in March 2023, the ANKA-3 underwent rigorous ground testing before taking to the skies. Its jet engine and structural design enable a substantial air platform volume, boasting a maximum take-off weight (MTOW) of 6.5 tons.
Equipped to carry substantial ammunition loads, the ANKA-3 has a capacity for 650 kg at each fuselage station, along with additional stations on the wings. This versatile payload capacity allows integration of various munitions, from standard UAV ammunition to larger ordnances like the SOM-J, MK-82, and Small Diameter Bomb.
In a groundbreaking move, plans for a tanker version of the ANKA-3 aim to provide aerial refueling services to other platforms.
An intriguing addition is the Super Şimşek UAV, which will be attached under the wings, serving as part of the Autonomous Wingman Concept (OKU) program, functioning as a pilot assistant UAV.
Originally scheduled for its maiden flight in May 2023, the ANKA-3 faced delays due to performance issues with the UAV actuator cards. Following intensive development work, the UAV was prepared for its first flight since October. The success of ANKA-3 flight closely follows the planned but postponed flight of the Combat Fighter KAAN, marking a pivotal moment in Turkish aerospace advancements.
