Thales Installs Surveillance System in Spanish Enclave in Morocco

Defense News - Thales, the renowned tech giant, has joined forces with the Spanish security firm Trablisa to deploy an advanced surveillance system at the Melilla Command of the Spanish Civil Guard, situated in North Africa. The recently implemented Integrated Surveillance System is equipped with fixed surveillance stations featuring high-resolution day and night cameras, ensuring comprehensive coverage of both land and maritime borders in the city of Melilla.

Enhancing the system capabilities are state-of-the-art night vision thermal cameras and sophisticated monitoring and control software. Remarkably, the entire project was successfully completed in less than seven months, highlighting the efficiency and commitment of all involved parties.

Miguel Bueno, Thales project manager, attributed the rapid implementation of the surveillance upgrades to the unwavering commitment of the Civil Guard to embrace change. Overcoming challenges such as the intricate placement of surveillance systems, collaboration among diverse partners, procurement of top-performing equipment, and the stringent implementation deadline, the project success is credited to the harmonious collaboration of all stakeholders, including the Melilla CG command itself.

The decision to upgrade the command surveillance system comes in response to heightened security concerns arising from terrorism-related activities in the region. Notably, Spain apprehended a 59-year-old jihadist recruiter in Melilla in October, following the arrest of an Islamic State jihadist group supporter in Nador, a neighboring Moroccan town, earlier in the year. The swift and effective implementation of the Integrated Surveillance System underscores the importance of proactive security measures in addressing evolving threats.
