Successful Completion of Factory Acceptance Tests for Advanced Kronos GM HP Radar Enhances Italy's Air Defense System

Defense News ,Italy :- The Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) for the second Kronos GM HP radar, a pivotal component of the SAMP/T NG air defense system, have reached a successful conclusion, marking a significant milestone in the FSAF-PAAMS Programme aimed at bolstering Italy's air and missile defense capabilities. Leonardo, the renowned aerospace and defense company, is responsible for producing this cutting-edge radar.

The Kronos GM HP stands out as a state-of-the-art C-band radar equipped with an Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) antenna. This sophisticated technology allows for both horizontal and vertical beam steering, significantly enhancing the radar's proficiency in detecting, tracking, and classifying air and missile threats while providing precise guidance for missiles.

A standout feature of the Kronos GM HP radar is its incorporation of Gallium Nitride (GaN) components, amplifying the power output of its Transmit and Receive Modules (TRMs). This design choice significantly improves overall performance, particularly in challenging operational conditions.

The production of the Kronos GM HP radar was commissioned to Eurosam GIE by the Organisation for Joint Armament Co-operation (OCCAR) in December 2021, with the objective of integrating it into the SAMP/T NG systems slated for delivery in 2026.

The FAT for the second radar unit, designated Kronos GM HP K2, took place at Leonardo's facilities in Fusaro/Arco Felice, Italy, under the scrutiny of OCCAR experts. Commencing with a Test Readiness Review (TRR) on January 23, 2024, the process concluded with the successful completion of all tests, affirming the radar's robust performance and capabilities.

Post-FAT, additional tests were conducted at Leonardo's site to meticulously evaluate all aspects of the Kronos radar, further solidifying its role in advancing Italy's air defense capabilities.
