Spain Partners with Rheinmetall for Around 1,00,000 Artillery Ammo Supply

Defense News ,Spain :-  The Spanish government has chosen Rheinmetall, the world's biggest artillery ammunition maker, to provide 94,200 rounds of 155mm ammunition. The deal is worth around €208 million. These artillery rounds are set to reach the Spanish army between late 2024 and the end of 2025, with an option to extend for two more years.

This isn't the first time Spain has ordered this ammo, making it the second deal with Rheinmetall. This new order highlights Rheinmetall's trustworthiness as a key supplier to the Spanish army.

The ER02A1 high-explosive (HE) projectiles, part of this order, can reach a maximum distance of 30 kilometers in the boat-tail (BT) version and nearly 40 kilometers in the base-bleed (BB) version. The BB variant has a special device at its base that heats the air during its trajectory, reducing drag and extending the maximum range.

Rheinmetall's leading role in European ammunition development and production is reinforced by these recent contracts in the 155mm artillery ammunition field. Framework agreements with various NATO member states ensure a stable supply of artillery ammunition.

On February 12, 2024, a symbolic groundbreaking event took place for a new plant in Unterlüß, Lower Saxony, attended by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. This facility will produce explosives, rocket artillery components, and specifically, artillery ammunition. Additionally, on February 18, 2024, Rheinmetall and a Ukrainian partner company signed a memorandum of understanding, paving the way for artillery ammunition production in Ukraine in the future.
