South Korean Military Deploys First Advanced Command Post Vehicles

Defense News - The initial deployment of cutting-edge command post vehicles by the South Korean Army marks a significant step towards enhancing coordination among military units during emergencies. Unveiled at the 25th Infantry Division in Yangju, approximately 30 kilometers north of Seoul, these armored vehicles are equipped with state-of-the-art communication systems, ensuring improved combat command capabilities on the move.

Reports suggest that these advanced vehicles have been fortified to withstand powerful enemy strikes, featuring enhanced protection against chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threats. The ambitious plan of the Korean Army involves deploying a total of 600 of these advanced command post vehicles by the year 2029, with additional units slated for distribution to the Marine Corps.

The developmental journey of South Korea advanced command post vehicle spanned from 2017 to 2020, with its design rooted in the K808 wheeled armored vehicle. Key features include the incorporation of the Army Tactical Command and Control Information System and the Battalion Battle Command System, facilitating real-time sharing of combat situations. Practical enhancements, such as a central tire inflation system and a water navigation device for shallow water crossings, further contribute to the vehicle operational versatility.

A substantial contract worth 700 billion Korean won ($530 million) was awarded to Hyundai Rotem by the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) in June 2023 for the supply of an undisclosed number of these command post vehicles. This strategic move replaces the outdated tent-type field command posts, known for their time-consuming setup and vulnerability to enemy attacks.

The adoption of these high-tech command post vehicles aligns with South Korea broader initiative to introduce state-of-the-art equipment into its military infrastructure, aiming to enhance operational capabilities. Noteworthy efforts include contracting Hanwha Aerospace to acquire cutting-edge command and control systems for the K239 Chunmoo Multiple Rocket Launch System, and engaging Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering for the development of a revolutionary submarine drone, emphasizing the nation commitment to building a formidable marine force with qualitative superiority.
