Russian Foreign Ministry Dismisses US Allegations Against India, Citing Lack of Evidence

Russia

Russian Foreign Ministry dismisses US allegations against India for a foiled assassination plot, citing lack of evidence and asserting the need for respect towards India's sovereignty. India maintains its stance, rejecting the claims as speculative and irresponsible, while conducting a thorough investigation into the matter.

In a recent development, the Russian Foreign Ministry has rebuffed allegations leveled against India by the United States regarding a foiled assassination plot targeting pro-Khalistan radical Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. Maria Zakharova, the official spokeswoman of the Russian Foreign Ministry, emphasized that Washington has yet to provide substantial evidence implicating Indian citizens in the purported scheme.

Zakharova highlighted that the absence of concrete evidence renders speculations on the matter unwarranted and unacceptable. She underscored the importance of understanding India's national mentality and historical context, lamenting the lack of respect demonstrated by the U.S. towards India as a sovereign state.

The spokeswoman's remarks came in response to queries concerning accusations against an Indian official in connection with the alleged assassination plot. Zakharova criticized a media publication for its characterization of India's actions, suggesting that such labeling would be more fitting for Washington itself. She suggested that the U.S.'s consistent unfounded accusations against India reflect a broader misunderstanding of the country's historical background and a neocolonial mindset.

The allegations, according to Zakharova, not only target India but also mirror a pattern of interference in the internal affairs of sovereign nations. She speculated that such actions may aim to disrupt India's political stability, particularly in light of impending parliamentary elections.

Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, the purported target of the foiled plot, is identified as an India-designated terrorist holding American and Canadian citizenship. The allegations stem from a U.S. Justice Department indictment unsealed in November, which implicated an Indian national in the assassination plot.

India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has vehemently rejected the accusations, denouncing them as speculative and irresponsible. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal reiterated the ongoing investigation by a High-Level Committee established to address security concerns raised by the U.S. government.

The Washington Post report, which alleged the involvement of an Indian Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) official named Vikram Yadav, prompted further scrutiny. However, Indian authorities have maintained that such claims lack substantiation and undermine the seriousness of the matter at hand.

The indictment filed by the U.S. Justice Department charges Indian national Nikhil Gupta with murder-for-hire in connection with the alleged assassination plot. Gupta, currently in custody in the Czech Republic, faces extradition to the U.S. for trial.

India's response to the developments underscores its commitment to thorough investigation and adherence to established legal procedures. The formation of a high-level committee to probe the matter reflects the government's proactive approach in addressing concerns raised by international partners.

In summary, Russia's dismissal of the allegations against India underscores the need for concrete evidence and adherence to due process. The ongoing investigation signifies India's commitment to upholding the rule of law and addressing security concerns in a transparent manner.
