"Rescue op will be Completed by the End of Day:" says NDRF DG Atul Karwal
The Director General of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Atul Karwal, announced on Thursday that the collaborative efforts of multiple agencies are expected to successfully complete the rescue operations for 41 workers trapped in the Silkyara tunnel in Uttarakashi by the day end.
Arriving at the Silkyara Tunnel collapse site on Thursday, DG NDRF provided an update to ANI, stating, "The auger machine has resumed its operations. We plan to send 2-3 pipes of 6 meters inside. Barring any unforeseen obstacles, we anticipate concluding the rescue operation by the end of the day."
The trapped workers find themselves in a 2 km-long section that is fully constructed, ensuring their safety. Rescue teams have been diligently drilling through debris, creating openings wide enough for the trapped workers to exit. The auger machine, capable of drilling through approximately 3 meters of debris per hour, encountered a metal obstruction earlier in the operation.
DG Atul Karwal expressed optimism, saying, "Our teams are prepared, and I am hopeful that we will successfully rescue the workers soon. The NDRF is equipped to handle any challenges that may arise, and special tools are in place to expedite the rescue process."
Providing an update on the situation, Uttarkashi District Magistrate Abhishek Ruhela mentioned that rescuers have made significant progress, breaching through the collapsed portion of the Sikyara tunnel debris. Speaking to ANI, he conveyed that only a small amount of work remains to complete the ongoing 12-day rescue operation.
Using a specialized auger machine, rescuers resumed drilling on Tuesday and, by late Wednesday night, had penetrated 45 meters of the 60-meter debris stretch blocking the Sikyara side of the under-construction tunnel from Silkyara to Barkot.
A state government official indicated that the rescue operation is in its final stages, with expectations that the trapped workers will be successfully extracted today. The incident occurred on November 12 when a section of the under-construction tunnel from Silkyara to Barkot collapsed, trapping 41 laborers in the 60-meter debris stretch on the Silkyara side of the tunnel.
