In recent remarks to Breaking Defence, a Pentagon intelligence official downplayed concerns regarding China's latest strategic bomber, the Xian H-20. The official, speaking anonymously, highlighted significant engineering challenges within the Chinese program, suggesting that the H-20 lacks compatibility with advanced US platforms.

The H-20, first unveiled in 2016, has drawn comparisons to Northrup Grumman's B-2 Spirit and the newer B-21 Raider. However, according to the official, closer examination reveals notable disparities in capabilities between the H-20 and its American counterparts. Challenges in system design, particularly in achieving low observability (LO) akin to US platforms, have hindered the H-20's progress.

While details on the H-20 remain scarce, the Pentagon's 2021 report to Congress suggests a range exceeding 8,500km and a payload capacity of at least 10 tonnes, with the ability to deploy both conventional and nuclear weapons. Computer-generated designs circulating online depict a flying wing configuration reminiscent of the B-2 and B-21, alongside features such as a weapons bay and stealth air intakes.

Wang Wei, deputy commander of the PLA Air Force, hinted at an impending official announcement of the H-20. However, he emphasized that China harbors no intention for direct comparisons with US capabilities and is not beset by technical hurdles.

The defence intelligence official noted China's potential unveiling of the H-20 as a demonstration of military prowess, rather than a guarantee of effective capability. While Washington remains cautious, acknowledging China's efforts to bolster its military strength and exploit perceived US weaknesses, the official stressed the uncertainties surrounding the H-20's operational effectiveness in a hypothetical conflict scenario.

China's strategic preparations, characterized by a focus on long-term conflict readiness, have prompted Washington to view Beijing as a "pacing challenge." Despite assurances regarding the H-20's capabilities, the official underscored China's deliberate efforts to enhance its military capacity and readiness.
