Pakistan and Iran Discuss Kashmir Issue During President Raisi's Visit

In a joint statement issued after the maiden visit of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi to Pakistan, both countries have expressed their agreement on the necessity of resolving the Kashmir issue through peaceful means, in accordance with the will of the region's people. President Raisi's official visit, which took place from April 22-24 at the invitation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, underscored the shared commitment to dialogue and diplomacy in addressing regional challenges.

The statement emphasized the importance of peaceful settlement of disputes, highlighting the Kashmir issue as a prime example. Both nations reiterated the significance of resolving the matter through dialogue and respecting the aspirations of the people of Kashmir, in conformity with international law.

India's consistent stance on Kashmir as an integral part of its territory has been well-documented. The Ministry of External Affairs has repeatedly dismissed external commentary on the issue, reaffirming India's sovereignty over the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.

During a joint press conference following discussions between Prime Minister Sharif and President Raisi, Kashmir was brought up by the Pakistani leader, who appreciated Iran's supportive stance. However, President Raisi refrained from directly addressing the issue, instead focusing on Iran's solidarity with oppressed populations, notably in Palestine.

This nuanced exchange underscores the complexities surrounding the Kashmir dispute and the divergent perspectives held by regional stakeholders. While Pakistan seeks external validation for its stance on Kashmir, India remains steadfast in its position on the matter.

President Raisi's visit to Pakistan marks a significant diplomatic engagement between the two nations, providing an opportunity for dialogue on various regional issues. While Kashmir remains a contentious topic, both Pakistan and Iran reaffirm their commitment to peaceful resolutions and dialogue in addressing regional challenges.
