Pakistan Mulls Co-production of Anti-Tank Guided Weapons with Turkish Roketsan

Pakistan is strengthening its defense ties by exploring the acquisition of anti-tank guided weapon systems (ATGWs) from its longstanding ally, Turkey, as per sources within the defense and security establishment. Additionally, there are considerations for co-production of these ATGWs in collaboration with the Turkish weapons manufacturer Roketsan.

Anti-tank guided weapon systems are designed to eliminate enemy tanks and armored vehicles and can vary in range from short to medium or long-range capabilities. Roketsan offers a variety of such systems, including the man-portable KARAOK, a short-range fire-and-forget anti-tank guided missile, as well as the OMTAS and UMTAS, which are medium and long-range anti-tank missile systems, respectively.

The defense collaboration between Pakistan and Turkey has witnessed significant growth in recent years. In addition to the potential acquisition of ATGWs, both countries have engaged in co-production ventures involving combat jets and missiles. There have been reports suggesting Pakistan involvement in the development of Turkey 5th-generation Kaan fighter aircraft, known as TF-X. The anticipated first flight of the TF-X is slated for December 2023.

In 2021, the inauguration of the corvette warship PNS Khyber marked another milestone in the strategic cooperation between Pakistan and Turkey. This warship is part of a broader initiative involving the construction of four corvettes for the Pakistani Navy.

Furthermore, Turkey has been involved in the maintenance and upgrade of Pakistan weapon systems, including the mid-life upgrade of Agosta 90B-class submarines and the procurement of Turkish defense manufacturer Baykar Kemankes cruise missile. Pakistan reliance on Turkey for maintenance and upgrades has reportedly increased due to strained relations with Western countries.

The collaboration extends beyond conventional weaponry, with Pakistan acquiring Turkish-made unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) such as Bayraktar TB2, Bayraktar Akıncı, and Bayraktar TB3. Additionally, there have been agreements for the production of Anka UAVs in Pakistan through a partnership between Pakistan National Engineering & Scientific Commission (NESCOM) and Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI).

To further enhance its capabilities, the Pakistan Army has reportedly signed a contract for the procurement of an Electronic Intelligence (ELINT) system under the AGILE project, in collaboration with Italian defense manufacturer Elettronica. ELINT systems play a crucial role in gathering and analyzing information, particularly related to radar transmissions, using electronic sensors. The Integrated Site Acceptance and Testing (ISAT) for this system are expected to take place in Pakistan.
