North Korean Hackers Leverage Generative AI in Cyber Attack, South Korean Intelligence Warns
Defense News , North & South Korea :- Seoul's intelligence agency has revealed that North Korean hackers are utilizing generative artificial intelligence (AI) solutions to pinpoint targets and execute digital assaults. Generative AI, a technology that generates diverse data based on learned models with minimal human intervention, has raised concerns for South Korea's National Intelligence Service (NIS.
The NIS disclosed that it is actively monitoring activities linked to Pyongyang's technological endeavors and has issued advisories outlining potential issues that may arise if North Korea exploits the cyber domain.
According to the NIS, there is apprehension about provocations that could lead to North Korea designating South Korea as a hostile country, potentially causing social chaos by disrupting critical infrastructure and public administrative services.
Furthermore, South Korea has expressed worries that North Korea's cyber capabilities could be employed to disseminate false information and manipulate political affairs, including meddling in elections and sowing distrust in the government.
The NIS emphasized concerns about attempts to spread fake news, deepfake videos, or hack election systems, describing it as a form of cyber information warfare aimed at stealing diplomatic strategies and cutting-edge technologies.
The intelligence agency warned of an anticipated surge in hacking attempts against South Korea due to the country's expanding strategic relationships with partner nations, notably the United States. The evolving dynamics around the Korean Peninsula, such as heightened cooperation between Korea, the US, and Japan, alongside increased exchanges between North Korea and Russia, are identified as factors contributing to an escalation in hacking attempts targeting South Korea's diplomatic, security, and advanced technology sectors by North Korea and China.
Despite the revelations, the NIS clarified that there are currently no signs indicating North Korea's use of AI for actual military purposes. The situation remains a cause for vigilance, however, as the cyber threat landscape continues to evolve.
