Lithuania purchases Thales GM200 MM/C Radar Systems

Defense News ,Lithuania :- Lithuania has recently inked a deal worth EUR 126.7 million to acquire state-of-the-art Thales GM200 MM/C radar systems from Thales Nederland, according to an announcement by the Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence on Wednesday.

The primary objective of these radar systems is to pinpoint the locations of the enemy indirect fire systems by tracking the trajectory of projectiles, enabling a swift and effective response to enemy attacks, as highlighted by Lithuanian Defence Minister Arvydas Anuszauskas.

Minister Anuszauskas emphasized the significance of this procurement, stating that it will substantially bolster the artillery capabilities of the Lithuanian Armed Forces. The Thales GM200 MM/C radar systems, renowned for their advanced solutions, have already been adopted by the armed forces of the Netherlands and Norway.

The comprehensive radar purchase agreement includes technical documentation, operator and maintenance technician training, an initial package of spare parts, specialized tools, and testing equipment. The first batch of radar systems is expected to be delivered to Lithuania in 2026.

Furthermore, the Defence Ministries of Lithuania and the Netherlands are exploring avenues for future collaboration. The potential involvement of the Lithuanian defense industry in similar armament projects is also under consideration.

Thales Ground Master 200, part of the Multi Mission family, incorporates Thales 4D AESA technology and builds on the extensive experience of more than 20 user groups. The GM200 MM/C variant, characterized by high tactical mobility and quick deployment, is particularly suited for missions such as artillery Counter Battery and Weapon Locating, as well as Very Short-Range Air Defence and Short-Range Air Defence (VSHOR/SHORAD).

The Thales GM200 MM/A version is an "all in one" radar primarily designed for Air Surveillance and Ground-Based Air Defence operations, including low-level Medium Range Air Defence (MRAD). Its integrated Command and Control shelter facilitates air surveillance with elevation for low-level tracking, accommodating two operators on board.

Both variants of the Ground Master 200 Multi Mission radars are known for their ease of transport, optimization for network-centric remote operations, and time-saving features in planning, training, and operation. Thales scalable and upgradable antenna architecture, featuring fully digital and software-defined 4D AESA radar technology, ensures the radar adaptability over its lifecycle to effectively counter evolving threats.
