Lithium Battery Systems for Italy’s New U212 NFS Submarines

Defense News ,Italy :- In a recent gathering in Taranto, Italy, the 6th Programme Committee Meeting of the OCCAR, a prominent international armament cooperation organization, focused on the advancements in the 212NFS (Near Future Submarines) project for the Italian Marina Militare.

One of the pivotal points of discussion was the remarkable progress in submarine technology, particularly the integration of a state-of-the-art Lithium Battery System (LBS) into the U212NFS submarines. The successful completion of critical performance and safety tests for the LBS components prototype marked a significant technical achievement, showcasing Italy's strategic shift towards advanced, efficient, and sustainable power storage solutions in naval applications.

The Lithium Battery System is anticipated to elevate the operational efficiency of the submarines, enhancing propulsion and endurance capabilities, reducing maintenance requirements, and ensuring top-notch on-board safety. This technological stride underscores Italy's dedication to investing in cutting-edge technologies, solidifying its position at the forefront of maritime defense capabilities.

Furthermore, the meeting delved into the roadmap for the construction of the fourth unit, NFS 4, within the 212NFS project. This comprehensive plan encompasses both the construction phase and logistical and in-service support for the fleet. The submarines are being manufactured by the renowned Italian shipbuilding group, Fincantieri S.p.A., in collaboration with the German holding, thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (tkMS), the licensor of the design. Notably, Italy already operates four U212A submarines, and the U212NFS project represents a noteworthy evolution of these existing models.
