Latvia Signs $105M Coastal Missile Defense Deal With U.S
Latvia has inked a deal with the United States to acquire the Naval Strike Missile (NSM) Coastal Defence Systems from Kongsberg and Raytheon. The projected cost for this capability is $105 million, with the US set to cover 70% of the total expenses. Delivery of the NSM system is anticipated in 2027.
This agreement is part of Latvia legislative amendments, specifically the changes to the Law on Financing National Defence, aimed at boosting national military expenditure with a focus on coastal and air defense systems, along with artillery.
In terms of peacekeeping measures, Latvian Defense Minister Andris Sprūds highlighted that the Naval Strike Missile Coastal Defence Systems would enhance the National Armed Forces capabilities and contribute significantly to national defense. The system is designed to safeguard coastal areas and ensure the security of shipping lanes.
Sprūds emphasized the versatility of these systems, indicating their availability for collective defense within the Alliance when required. The overarching goal is to fortify Latvia shipping routes and promote regional peace.
US Ambassador Christopher Robinson underscored the importance of international collaboration in the face of Russia aggression, particularly evident in the Russo-Ukrainian war. He stated that supporting Latvia in building its defensive capabilities is crucial for defending sovereignty, values, and freedom. Earlier this year, Latvia reinstated compulsory military service for young men in response to ongoing conflicts.
