Kyiv, US Aim to Move Arms Production to Ukraine
On Thursday, Kyiv declared a recent agreement with the United States aimed at bolstering the domestic production of arms in Ukraine, a move seen as crucial amid uncertainties regarding continued Western support in its conflict with Russia.
Throughout Russia invasion, Ukraine has relied on Western military assistance, including weapons and ammunition, to resist Russian forces. However, as the conflict has persisted for nearly two years, there are emerging indications of waning enthusiasm in both Europe and the United States to provide sustained financial and military aid.
The Ukrainian presidency disclosed that the newly signed memorandum highlights the prioritization of localizing the defense industry within Ukraine. The objective is to establish production facilities in the country, specifically focusing on supplying the armed forces with essential weapons, particularly in the domains of air defense, critical munitions production, and repair and sustainment.
During a defense industry conference in Washington this week, attended by approximately 350 American, Ukrainian, and European industrialists and government officials, these plans were reportedly formulated. The event served as a platform for collaboration between Ukrainian and U.S. manufacturers.
This strategic move comes at a time when Russian President Vladimir Putin has confidently predicted the collapse of Ukraine within a week without continued support from Europe and the United States. Notably, Germany defense minister acknowledged a shortfall in the European Union target to send one million shells to Ukraine within a one-year timeframe.
In parallel, several prominent Western weapons manufacturers, such as Rheinmetall of Germany and BAE Systems of Britain, have already announced intentions to collaborate with Ukrainian counterparts within the nation, signaling a concerted effort to enhance Ukraine self-reliance in defense production.
