Italy Approves 132 'Leopard 2A8' Tank Purchase Deal for the Army
Defense News ,Italy :- The Italian Parliament's Defense Committee has given the green light to buy 132 Leopard 2A8 main battle tanks. This tank-buying plan for the Italian Army will go on for 14 years until 2037.
The whole program is expected to cost around EUR 8.5 billion, as approved by the Italian Parliament. In this deal, the Italian Armed Forces will get 132 Leopard 2A8 main battle tanks and about 140 other vehicles. All these vehicles will be made at the La Spezia facilities, which belong to the Italian defense company Leonardo.
The Italian Leopard 2A8IT tanks will also have electronic systems provided by the Iveco – Oto Melara Consortium (CIO). In December 2023, Leonardo and KNDS signed an agreement to work together on producing Leopard 2A8 tanks. This deal allows Leonardo to take part as an industrial partner in the future European Main Ground Combat System (MGCS) program.
