Italian Navy Launches Its Tenth FREMM Frigate, Emilio Bianchi
The Italian Navy's new FREMM frigate, Emilio Bianchi, launched at the Riva Trigoso shipyard, will replace older Lupo- and Maestrale-class ships, enhancing Italy's maritime capabilities.
The Italian Navy has launched its tenth FREMM (Fregata Europea Multi-Missione) frigate, named Emilio Bianchi, at the Riva Trigoso integrated shipyard in northern Italy. The ship, commissioned by Fincantieri with close collaboration from the Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR), will undergo further tests and outfitting before being handed over to the navy by the third quarter of 2025.
Emilio Bianchi is part of Italy's ongoing effort to modernize its naval fleet, replacing the aging Lupo- and Maestrale-class ships built in the 1970s and 1980s. The first eight FREMM frigates were delivered to the Italian Navy between 2012 and 2019, with another vessel, Spartaco Schergat, expected to be delivered by April 2025.
The FREMM frigates are designed for both general-purpose and anti-submarine roles. They can reach speeds of over 31 miles (50 kilometers) per hour and have a range of 7,800 miles (12,600 kilometers). These ships measure 472 feet (144 meters) in length, 66 feet (20 meters) in width, and have a full load displacement of 6,700 tons.
Italy's FREMM frigates enhance the navy's operational capabilities with advanced technology and versatility. Two air defense variants of this class are also in service with the French Navy, showcasing the design's adaptability and international appeal.
The FREMM program demonstrates Italy's commitment to maintaining a robust and modern naval fleet, ensuring the country's maritime security and capability to respond to various maritime threats.
The launch of Emilio Bianchi marks a significant step in Italy's naval modernization efforts, reflecting the strategic importance of maintaining advanced and capable maritime forces.
FREMM frigates are equipped with state-of-the-art systems, including advanced radar, sonar, and electronic warfare capabilities. They are also capable of launching a variety of missiles, making them highly versatile in combat situations. The collaboration with OCCAR ensures that these vessels meet high standards of interoperability with other European naval forces.
