Indonesia Enhances Air Force Capabilities with Arrival of Airbus H225M Multi-Role Helicopters

In a recent ceremony led by Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto, the Indonesian Air Force proudly received eight H225M helicopters from Airbus, marking a significant milestone in bolstering the country military capabilities. Manufactured by Airbus and locally assembled by PT Dirgantara Indonesia, these helicopters are part of a broader initiative to involve local firms in defense procurements.

The versatile H225Ms will be integrated into the Air Force Air Squadron 8, undertaking specialized missions such as aerial fire support, combat search and rescue, medical evacuation, and maritime surveillance. This delivery follows a 2019 agreement aimed at expanding the existing fleet of six H225Ms.

Key Features of the Airbus H225M Multi-Role Helicopters

The H225M is a combat-proven military helicopter designed for diverse military operations, including tactical troop transport, combat search and rescue, medical evacuation, special operations, logistics support, and maritime operations. Notable specifications include:

  • Dimensions: Length of 16.79 m, rotor diameter of 16.2 m, and height of 4.97 m.
  • Performance: Maximum speed of 324 km/h, cruising speed of 278 km/h, range of 857 km, service ceiling of 4,700 m, and hover ceiling of 2,700 m.
  • Payload: Maximum internal payload of 5,371 kg and cargo hook capacity of 4,100 kg.
  • Engines: Two Turbomeca Makila 2A turboshaft engines, each producing 1,833 kW.
  • Other features: Four-axis dual-duplex automatic flight control system, advanced avionics suite, ballistic protection, self-sealing fuel tanks, and hover-in-flight refueling capability.

    Full Flight Simulator Unveiled

    In addition to the helicopter delivery, the ceremony showcased the unveiling of a full flight simulator for the H225M. Constructed at Lanud ATS, this simulator stands as the only FAA-qualified flight simulator training device in Southeast Asia. Minister Prabowo emphasized the commitment to enhancing the Indonesian military by seeking top-notch equipment and maintenance, aiming to cultivate a reliable, superior, resilient, and robust Air Force.

    This strategic acquisition and technological advancement underscore Indonesia dedication to fortifying its national defense capabilities and fostering domestic participation in defense initiatives.
