Indian Troops Showcase Army Martial Arts Routine during Mitra Shakti Exercise with Sri Lanka

Indian Army troops demonstrated their Army Martial Arts Routine (AMAR) during the ongoing Mitra Shakti 23 exercise with Sri Lanka on Friday. AMAR, a form of mixed martial arts, is touted as an effective defense against both sharp-edged and improvised weapons, showcasing the soldiers versatile combat skills.

Highlighting the seamless integration between Indian and Sri Lankan troops, the joint martial arts display emphasized the highest standards of jointmanship and camaraderie. Mitra Shakti 23, a 12-day joint military exercise between the Indian and Sri Lankan Armies, aims to enhance cooperation and interoperability.

Taking place from November 16th to 29th, 2023, the exercise involves 120 personnel from the Indian Army, primarily from the Maratha Light Infantry regiment. The Sri Lankan side is represented by personnel from the 53 Infantry Division, with additional participation from 15 Indian Air Force personnel and five from the Sri Lankan Air Force.

The exercise focuses on jointly rehearsing sub-conventional operations under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter, with a particular emphasis on counter-terrorist operations. Tactical actions such as raids, search and destroy missions, and heliborne operations are practiced, showcasing the commitment to effective collaborative responses.

The curriculum includes training in Army Martial Arts Routine (AMAR), combat reflex shooting, and Yoga. Additionally, Exercise Mitra Shakti-2023 incorporates the use of drones, Counter Unmanned Aerial Systems, and helicopters. Drills covering the securement of helipads and casualty evacuation during counter-terrorist operations are jointly rehearsed.

The collective efforts of both armies aim to achieve an enhanced level of interoperability, reducing risks to life and property during peacekeeping operations while aligning with the interests and agenda of the United Nations. The exchange of views and practices during the exercise facilitates mutual learning, fostering a strong bilateral relationship between India and Sri Lanka.

Sharing best practices is seen as a key element in strengthening defense cooperation between the Indian Army and the Sri Lankan Army. Mitra Shakti-2023 underscores the commitment of both nations to building a robust partnership in the realm of military capabilities and strategic collaboration.
