Indian Navy Inducts Unmanned Shipborne Camcopter Schiebel S-100
Defense News , India :- In a significant achievement reported by Alpha Defence, the Indian Navy has successfully concluded its inaugural pilot training program for the cutting-edge unmanned shipborne Camcopter Schiebel S-100 at INS Garuda Kochi. Commander K Sri Vatsa, CO Garuda, presented graduation certificates, marking a crucial step in bolstering the Indian Navy surveillance capabilities in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
The induction of the Schiebel S-100 is poised to elevate the Indian Navy surveillance prowess, following the successful training conducted at INS Garuda Kochi. The unmanned aircraft system (UAS), showcased by Schiebel Systems India and VEM Technologies at the Aero India 2023 show in Bangalore, held from February 13 to 17, 2023, features the distinctive insignia of the Indian Navy and the national roundel on its airframe.
Schiebel Systems India, a subsidiary of Schiebel Corporation, the original equipment manufacturer of the S-100 UAS, collaborated with local firm VEM Technologies to respond jointly to the Indian Navy request for information (RFI) aimed at acquiring 40 Naval Shipborne Unmanned Aerial Systems (NSUAS). These systems are intended for deployment on naval vessels exceeding 100 meters in length.
Issued in June 2022, the RFI outlined the Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the Indian Navy vision for the NSUAS, emphasizing their role in surveillance missions, signals intelligence (SIGINT), target acquisition, reconnaissance, and maritime domain awareness within a naval task group. Secondary functions include anti-piracy measures, anti-terrorist activities, and search-and-rescue support.
Having completed rigorous evaluations under the Indian Navy procurement program, the Schiebel S-100 emerged as a preferred choice. In response to the Navy requirements, Schiebel Systems India and VEM Technologies plan to manufacture the vertical take-off and landing (VTOL)-capable S-100, incorporating assembly and payload integration. Schiebel Corporation is committed to maximizing local content in this endeavor.
The Schiebel Camcopter S-100, a versatile unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) designed for both military and civilian applications, stands out with its VTOL capability, eliminating the need for a conventional runway. With a maximum take-off weight of 200 kilograms (440 lb) and the ability to carry up to 50 kilograms (110 lb) of payload, the S-100 boasts an impressive endurance of up to 10 hours, further solidifying its role as a key asset for the Indian Navy.
