Indian-Flagged Oil Tanker Hit by Attack Drone in Red Sea

Defense News ,India :- In a continuation of escalating maritime tensions, an Indian-flagged crude oil tanker fell victim to an attack by Houthi rebels in the Red Sea. The assault involved two Houthi anti-ship ballistic missiles fired by a drone, as reported by the US military. The targeted vessel, MV SAIBABA, owned by Gabon, emerged unscathed from the incident, with no injuries or damage reported.

The US Central Command, utilizing their X handle (formerly Twitter), confirmed the attack and reassured that the MV SAIBABA sustained no harm. This event marks the 14th and 15th instances of Houthi militants targeting commercial shipping since October 17, underscoring the persistent threat posed by these rebel forces.

US Naval Forces Central Command received distress calls from two ships navigating the Southern Red Sea. The first, MV BLAAMANEN, a Norwegian-flagged chemical/oil tanker, narrowly avoided a Houthi one-way attack drone, reporting no injuries or damage. The second, MV SAIBABA, experienced the impact of a one-way attack drone, yet fortunately, no injuries were reported. In response to these attacks, the USS LABOON (DDG 58) swiftly intervened, highlighting the coordinated efforts to address such incidents.

A recent report from the US Central Command disclosed that on December 23, Houthi rebels fired two anti-ship ballistic missiles into international shipping lanes in the Southern Red Sea. Fortunately, no ships reported any impact from the ballistic missiles. The USS LABOON, engaged in Operation PROSPERITY GUARDIAN (OPG), effectively intercepted four unmanned aerial drones originating from Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen between 3 and 8 p.m. (Sanaa time), preventing any injuries or damage.

The incidents in the Southern Red Sea serve as a stark reminder of the persistent challenges faced by international shipping in the region. The US military quick response and intervention highlight the importance of coordinated efforts to ensure the safety and security of commercial vessels navigating these volatile waters.
