Indian Army Developing Military-grade 5G, 6G Apps; Thrust on Emerging Technologies
The Indian Army is actively engaged in a comprehensive initiative to develop cutting-edge military-grade 5G and 6G telecom applications, aiming to meet the evolving requirements of future warfare. Sources within the Army revealed on Wednesday that this ambitious project also involves the creation of advanced software, incorporating Artificial Intelligence (AI) for decision-making tools and predictive analytics to enhance intelligence and operational efficiency.
Collaborating with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), the Army has established 5G labs, with the Military College of Telecommunication Engineering in Madhya Pradesh positioned as a potential 6G test bed, according to informed sources. The development of military-grade applications aligns with the broader goal of addressing future warfare needs.
The Military College of Telecommunication Engineering has emerged as a center for AI research and development, showcasing innovations such as the Situational Awareness Module for the Army (SAMA) and advanced pattern recognition software for satellite imagery analysis. These advancements highlight the institute role in fostering technological breakthroughs.
To ensure that Army personnel are well-equipped with the latest digital and cybersecurity advancements, various initiatives have been undertaken. Training activities include specialized programs on digital video/image and CCTV forensics at the National Science University in Gandhinagar, as well as joint training of IT staff at the National Informatics Centre (NIC).
Key software applications developed by the Army, such as tools for reading the Enemy Electronic Order of Battle (ORBAT) and pattern recognition, are already functional. Recognizing the critical importance of cybersecurity, the Indian Army expertise is being integrated into Security Operations Centre 2.0 to effectively manage cyber threats.
The development of cutting-edge cybersecurity and cyber forensics tools further bolsters the Army capabilities in this domain. Initiatives like the Pradhan Mantri Gati Shakti Yojana have strategically incorporated the Army logistic infrastructure requirements, ensuring swift mobilization and efficient logistics supply in future wars.
The Indian Army efficiency and transparency in procurement processes have been lauded, with the force being recognized as one of the largest users of the government e-Marketplace portal. The sources also highlighted the digital revolution in the Army healthcare system, citing the "Dhanwantri" software that connects over 110 military hospitals, providing enhanced medical services. Telemedicine services are being utilized to deliver medical assistance to remote posts.
The effective functioning of the Human Resource Management Suite (HRMS) for documentation and the implementation of the ASAAN software for addressing Agniveers-related issues underscore the Army commitment to leveraging technology for streamlined operations and enhanced capabilities.
