Indian Air Force Issues Tender to HAL for Buying 12 Su-30 MKI Fighter Jets
In a move aimed at strengthening its air force capabilities, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has initiated a procurement process through a tender to acquire 12 advanced Su-30MKI fighter jets from the state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). According to sources in the defense sector, the tender signifies a collaborative effort between HAL and Russian original equipment manufacturers, with the manufacturing of these aircraft set to take place in India.
The HAL is expected to submit a detailed response to the tender, including project specifics, by the next month. Notably, the IAF emphasis on a substantial indigenous component aligns with the government Aatmanirbhar policies in the defense sector.
Describing these forthcoming aircraft as modern Su-30 MKI models equipped with a variety of Indian weapons and sensors, sources highlight the IAF ongoing efforts to enhance its fleet. As part of a broader initiative, the IAF is concurrently working on upgrading 84 Sukhoi-30 fighters, integrating indigenous weapon systems, advanced radars, and avionics in collaboration with HAL.
The completion of this ambitious project is expected to position HAL favorably for potential similar upgrades in foreign countries. Currently boasting a fleet of 272 Su-30 fighter jets acquired in different phases since the early 2000s, India has already upgraded these aircraft by incorporating Indian systems and weapons, such as the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile and the Astra air-to-air missile.
Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari, the Chief of the Indian Air Force, has lauded the BrahMos supersonic missile for significantly enhancing the firepower of the IAF. He emphasized the strategic advantage gained by equipping Sukhoi Su-30 fighter jets with BrahMos missiles and mentioned the ongoing development of smaller versions of the next-generation BrahMos for other combat aircraft.
The Su-30 fleet has played a pivotal role in various exercises and operations, including the Balakot air strikes and the current military standoff with the Chinese People Liberation Army, showcasing its importance in safeguarding India defense interests.
