India has reached a notable milestone in enhancing its defense capabilities through the successful test firing of a new version of a medium-range ballistic missile on April 23. The Strategic Forces Command conducted the test, though specifics about the missile tested have not been confirmed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) or the Ministry of Defence (MoD), leading to speculation about the introduction of a new variant.

Sources mentioned by idrw.org suggest that the missile in question might be an improved version of the land-based variant of the Sagarika, also known as the K-15 or B-05. Originally designed as a submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) by DRDO, the Sagarika underwent extensive user trials in 2018, showing potential advancements in its capabilities.

The K-15 or B-05, measuring 10 meters in length, has a range of about 750 kilometers and weighs around ten tonnes. With a two-stage propulsion system using solid propellant, it can carry a payload of up to 1000 kilograms. However, with a reduced payload, it can target distances of up to 1800 kilometers. idrw.org suggests that the missile may have received new composite panels, potentially reducing its weight and increasing its range.

Although specific details about the new variant remain undisclosed, the successful test firing signifies a significant advancement in India's pursuit of cutting-edge defense technologies. It reaffirms India's position as a strong military power in the region and highlights its commitment to maintaining peace and stability amid evolving security challenges.
