India Protests German Envoy's Comments on Arvind Kejriwal's Arrest
Defense News ,Germany :- India lodged a complaint on Saturday about what the German envoy said concerning Arvind Kejriwal's arrest in the Delhi liquor policy case. The ministry of external affairs said that the German envoy's words interfered with India's internal affairs.
George Enzweiler, the deputy head of mission of the German embassy, was called in by the MEA to officially make the complaint.
This protest from India happened after comments from the German foreign ministry stressing the need for a fair and unbiased trial for Kejriwal. The German spokesperson said, "We understand that India is a democratic country and hope that principles like judicial independence and democratic norms will be followed in this case." The spokesperson also talked about Kejriwal's right to a fair trial and the idea that everyone is innocent until proven guilty, which are important parts of the rule of law.
Kejriwal got arrested because of his alleged involvement in the Delhi liquor policy scam. The central agency accuses him of being involved in a conspiracy. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) claims that the policy, which doesn't exist anymore, allowed retailers to make huge profits, about 185%, and wholesalers about 12%. Kejriwal will stay in ED custody until March 28 for further questioning about his role in the case.
The investigation into the Delhi liquor policy case has been looking at a group of middlemen, businessmen, and politicians called the "South Group" by the central agencies. The ED's case focuses on the extremely high profits that the policy allowed for retailers and wholesalers. India's position on this issue shows its commitment to following legal procedures and ensuring a fair trial for everyone involved.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) plans to protest outside the Prime Minister's residence on March 26 against Kejriwal's arrest by the ED, as announced by party leader Gopal Rai.
Currently, two senior AAP leaders, Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh, are in judicial custody because of the excise policy case. Sisodia, the former deputy CM, was taken into custody by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on February 26 after being questioned extensively. Also, on October 5, the ED arrested Sanjay Singh, a member of the Rajya Sabha.
Kejriwal's arrest happened right after the ED detained K Kavitha, a leader of the Bharat Rashta Samithi (BRS) and daughter of the former Telangana CM K Chandrasekhar Rao, on charges related to money laundering connected to the defunct excise policy. Kavitha will remain in ED custody until March 26.
