India Asks Pakistan for Release of 184 Fishermen and Consular Access in Annual Exchange
Defense news, India & Pakistan :- Annually, on the 1st of January and 1st of July, India and Pakistan engage in a diplomatic ritual, exchanging lists of civilian prisoners and fishermen as part of the 2008 Agreement on Consular Access. In the latest development, India formally appealed to Pakistan to expedite the release and repatriation of 184 Indian fishermen who have completed their sentences, along with seeking immediate consular access to the remaining 12 civilian prisoners believed to be Indian.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety, security, and welfare of all Indian and presumed-to-be Indian civilian prisoners and fishermen in Pakistan custody. Simultaneously, India reciprocated by sharing lists of 337 civilian prisoners and 81 fishermen in its custody, identified as Pakistani or believed to be Pakistani. Pakistan, in return, provided lists of 47 civilian prisoners and 184 fishermen in its custody, presumed to be Indian.
Highlighting successful past efforts, the MEA noted that 2,639 Indian fishermen and 67 Indian civilian prisoners have been repatriated from Pakistan since 2014, including 478 Indian fishermen and 9 Indian civilian prisoners in 2023.
India, emphasizing its commitment to addressing humanitarian matters promptly, urged Islamabad to confirm the nationality status of 65 believed-to-be Pakistani prisoners, including fishermen, whose repatriation is pending due to a lack of confirmation from Pakistan.
In addition to the prisoner exchange, both nations adhered to another annual ritual by exchanging lists of nuclear installations and facilities. This exchange, marking the 33rd consecutive year under the Agreement on the Prohibition of Attack against Nuclear Installations and Facilities signed in 1988, involves informing each other about covered installations on the first of January each year. The diplomatic exchange, mandated by the agreement, entered into force on January 27, 1991.
