In Poonch attack, Pak-China plan to divert Indian troops from Ladakh: Sources
Defense News ,India :- In a strategic move aimed at diverting Indian Army resources from the Ladakh border, Pakistan and China are reportedly working together to revive terrorist activities in the Poonch sector of Jammu and Kashmir, according to authoritative defense sources.
The recent terrorist ambush in Poonch, resulting in the deaths of five soldiers, is part of an alarming surge in attacks targeting Indian forces in the region. The coordinated strategy between Islamabad and Beijing appears to be an attempt to pressure India into redeploying troops from Ladakh to Kashmir.
Sources indicate that Pakistan has successfully infiltrated 25-30 terrorists into the forested areas of Poonch, with plans to launch attacks on security forces and provoke responses. China, dissatisfied with India increased troop presence in Ladakh following the 2020 Galwan border stand-off, is allegedly seeking to ease pressure on the eastern front by reigniting terrorism in the west.
The suspicion is rooted in India crucial deployment of the Rashtriya Rifles, a specialized counterinsurgency force, from Poonch to Ladakh in 2020. While this move strengthened India position against China, it potentially left Poonch with fewer anti-terror resources.
Colonel Manoj Kumar, a defense expert, drew parallels between the current situation and Operation Sarp Vinash in 2003, conducted in the Surankote area of Poonch. He noted similarities in the terrorists use of hideouts and bases, emphasizing that Pakistan and China aim to prompt a redeployment of forces from the Chinese border by disrupting peace in these areas.
In response to the escalating threat, the Indian Army has deployed an additional brigade to the Poonch-Rajouri sector, with recent operations reportedly eliminating over 20 terrorists, including Pakistani nationals.
Retired Colonel Ajay Kothiyal highlighted the geopolitical context, pointing to the resentment caused by the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. Both Pakistan and China, disturbed by the Supreme Court recent upholding of the scrapping of Article 370, are expected to intensify their efforts to escalate terror activities in Jammu and Kashmir.
Despite the challenges, Colonel Kothiyal expressed confidence in the current strength and positioning of Indian forces, stating that issues are planned to be resolved effectively.
