INS Imphal Destroyer Commissioned: Key Points And Record Time Delivery

a momentous ceremony in Mumbai, the Indian Navy welcomed its newest
addition, INS Imphal, into its fleet on Tuesday (26 Dec 2023 ). Attended
by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath
Shinde, and Chief of Naval Staff Admiral R Hari Kumar, the commissioning
marked a significant milestone for the country naval capabilities.
Key Highlights of India Latest Warship:
1. Indigenous Design and Construction:
INS Imphal, a stealth guided missile destroyer, stands out as a
testament to indigenous naval prowess. Designed by the navy in-house
organization, the Warship Design Bureau, and crafted by Mazagon Dock
Limited, a Defense PSU in Mumbai, it symbolizes India self-reliance in
naval technology.
2. North-Eastern Significance:
The
third of the "Visakhapatnam" class destroyers, INS Imphal is the first
warship to bear the name of a north-eastern city, following presidential
approval. This naming choice underscores the strategic importance of
the region, emphasizing its role in national security and prosperity.
3. Swift Construction and Delivery:
With the keel laid on May 19, 2017, and the ship launched on April 20,
2019, INS Imphal boasts a remarkable timeline from construction to
delivery. The indigenously-built destroyer was handed over to the Navy
on October 20, 2023, making it the quickest turnaround for any
indigenous destroyer.
4. Historic Missile Testing:
INS Imphal achieved a historic feat as India first warship to conduct
successful missile tests before commissioning. Notably, the
extended-range supersonic BrahMos missile was test-fired in November,
showcasing the vessel advanced capabilities.
5. Operational Speed and Power:
With a displacement of 7,400 tonnes and an overall length of 164
meters, INS Imphal is powered by Combined Gas and Gas (COGAG)
propulsion, enabling speeds exceeding 30 knots (56 km/hour). Its
operational prowess is a key asset for the Western Naval Command.
6. Advanced Weaponry and Defense Systems:
Equipped with state-of-the-art surveillance radar, indigenously
developed rocket launchers, torpedo launchers, and anti-submarine
warfare helicopters, INS Imphal is a formidable force. It is designed to
operate under diverse conditions, including Nuclear, Biological, and
Chemical (NBC) warfare scenarios.
INS Imphal commissioning marks a
significant stride in India naval capabilities, reflecting a blend of
