Goa Shipyard Limited Launched India's First Indigenous Frigate INS Triput

In a remarkable stride towards self-reliance in defense production, Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) proudly launched the INS Triput, the first indigenous P1135.6 Frigate. This milestone was marked by a grand ceremony, attended by notable dignitaries including the Governor of Goa, PS Sreedharan Pillai, and Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, Vice Chief of Naval Staff. The ship was ceremoniously launched by Adv. Rita Sreedharan, highlighting the significance of this achievement in India's naval history.

The INS Triput is the first of two frigates of the P1135.6 class to be constructed indigenously by GSL, signifying a major leap in India's defense capabilities. This initiative aligns with the Indian government's 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (self-reliant India) vision, emphasizing the importance of indigenous production in strengthening national security.

Construction of the INS Triput began with the plate-cutting ceremony on September 20, 2020, followed by the keel laying on January 29, 2021. Since then, GSL has made significant progress, incorporating multiple complex and advanced indigenous technologies and systems into the vessel. The hull of the frigate is made from indigenous low-carbon micro-alloy steel, a specialized material developed to meet the specific requirements of the Indian Navy.

The 124-meter-long and 15.5-meter-wide frigate is designed to tackle the entire spectrum of naval warfare in all three dimensions. Propelled by four gas turbines, the ship can achieve a maximum speed of 28 knots and has a displacement of approximately 3200 tonnes. The frigate is equipped with state-of-the-art weapons and sensors, an integrated platform and bridge management system, and a vertical-launch long-range surface-to-air missile system for air defense. Additionally, the ship features indigenous power generation and distribution systems, an air conditioning system, a steering system, and stabilizers, all designed and developed by private Indian industries.

The launch of INS Triput not only enhances India's naval capabilities but also supports the local economy. The project is expected to generate substantial employment for local industries and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) involved in production activities at various factories and within GSL. This initiative demonstrates the collaboration between the Ministry of Defence, the Indian Navy, and the industry, ensuring that all shipbuilding requirements of the Indian Navy are fulfilled indigenously.

Governor PS Sreedharan Pillai, in his address, commended the efforts of the Ministry of Defence, the Indian Navy, and GSL in achieving this critical milestone. He urged everyone to continue the march towards self-reliance in defense production to meet future targets.

The successful launch of INS Triput is a testament to India's growing prowess in warship building and positions GSL among the elite Indian shipyards capable of producing advanced frigates for the Indian Navy. This achievement marks a significant step forward in India's journey towards becoming a self-reliant defense manufacturing hub, reinforcing the nation's commitment to 'Atmanirbhar Bharat'.
