Germany to Supply Ukraine with IRIS-T systems in $1.4 billion package
Germany is set to enhance its military assistance to Ukraine by supplying an additional four IRIS-T SLM medium-range air defense systems, part of a comprehensive aid package exceeding €1.3 billion ($1.4 billion), as announced by the German Defence Ministry on Thursday. The delivery of these systems is slated for 2025.
In a multifaceted aid initiative, the package includes drones, drone-defense systems, demining vehicles, satellite communications, electronic warfare equipment, directional anti-tank mines, and artillery shells. Geared towards addressing the urgent requirements of the Ukrainian armed forces, this support underscores Germany commitment to bolstering Ukraine defense capabilities.
Despite initial reservations, Germany has emerged as a leading provider of military aid to Ukraine, second only to the United States. German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius, responding to reports of a potential doubling of aid to €8 billion in 2024, affirmed plans to amplify military support for Ukraine earlier this month.
The IRIS-T systems, along with a second Patriot tracking radar delivered in October, are anticipated to reach Ukraine this year following the completion of training by Ukrainian personnel, according to the ministry statement.
Minister Pistorius, in a video conference with the Ukraine Defense Contact Group on November 22, pledged Germany enduring support, stating that the country will stand by Ukraine "now and for the long term."
Beyond immediate assistance, the contact group delved into the long-term development of the Ukrainian armed forces. Germany and France are set to lead a "capability coalition" involving over 20 nations, establishing the Capability Coalition Ground Based Air Defense, as outlined by the ministry.
Further reinforcing its commitment, Germany expressed readiness to make a "significant contribution" to modernizing and upgrading the Ukrainian armed forces. The objective is to fortify the Ukrainian military to a level where it can effectively counter Russian aggression and deter any future attacks, the ministry emphasized.
During the support meeting, Minister Pistorius highlighted Germany substantial contributions since the war onset, citing the significant strengthening of Ukraine air defense capabilities through the provision of Patriot and IRIS-T systems, along with nearly 50 Gepard anti-aircraft guns.
This intensified support aligns with U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin September call for allies to step up and provide enhanced air defense systems to help Ukraine defend against potential Russian missile barrages. As discussions continue, Germany remains poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the long-term defense capabilities of the Ukrainian armed forces.
