France to Deliver 78 Howitzers to Ukraine Urgently, Announces Defense Minister

Defense News ,France ,Ukraine :-  France is stepping up its support for Ukraine by providing essential military equipment to aid in its defense against Russia's ongoing invasion. Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu announced on Tuesday that France would deliver 78 Caesar howitzers to Ukraine, along with a significant increase in the supply of shells urgently needed for ammunition.

Lecornu revealed that France, Ukraine, and Denmark had reached an agreement to finance the Caesar self-propelled 155 mm howitzers, ensuring a swift delivery process. The goal is to provide Ukraine with the necessary firepower to respond effectively to the ongoing conflict.

Moreover, France aims to deliver 80,000 shells for 155 mm guns to Ukraine this year, a substantial increase from the 30,000 shells provided since the conflict began in February 2022. This boost in ammunition supply is critical for supporting Ukraine's defense efforts on the ground.

In addition to direct deliveries, France is collaborating with other European countries to identify available stocks of powder and ammunition outside the European Union. This initiative, spearheaded by the Czech Republic, aims to further enhance Ukraine's military capabilities by sourcing additional resources from various countries.

The Czech Republic, for instance, is working to secure 800,000 artillery shells for Ukraine, with plans for the first shipments to arrive no later than June. This initiative has garnered support from at least 18 countries, demonstrating a collective commitment to bolstering Ukraine's defense capabilities.

Earlier this month, Germany, France, and Poland pledged to procure more weapons for Ukraine and increase the production of military equipment. This commitment underscores the solidarity of European powers in supporting Ukraine's defense efforts amid escalating tensions with Russia.

Lecornu emphasized the importance of European countries reducing their reliance on the United States for security needs. He stressed that Europe must take greater responsibility for its security agenda, especially in light of potential shifts in U.S. foreign policy.

The defense minister highlighted concerns about the NATO alliance, particularly amid uncertainties surrounding the potential return of Donald Trump to the White House. Trump's previous remarks questioning U.S. commitment to defending allies have raised apprehensions among European leaders.

Even with President Joe Biden in office, EU leaders remain wary of the U.S. pivot to Asia and its implications for European security. Efforts to secure additional funding for arming Ukraine have faced challenges in the U.S. Congress, further highlighting the need for European self-reliance in security matters.
