Fincantieri Receives Order For 4th U212NFS Submarine

In a momentous event at Fincantieri’s Muggiano shipyard, the first steel cutting ceremony for the third U212 Near Future Submarine (NFS) marked a significant step forward in Italy’s naval prowess. The ceremony, which signifies the commencement of construction, was attended by distinguished guests including Vice Admiral Abbamonte, Italian Director for Naval Armament, Programme Board and Programme Committee Representative, OCCAR Director Mr. Joachim Sucker, and Dr. Dario Deste, General Manager Naval Vessels at Fincantieri. Their presence underscored the importance of this occasion, coinciding with the 7th NFS Programme Committee (PC) meeting in La Spezia on June 26, 2024.

The U212 NFS Programme, managed by the Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR) on behalf of the Italian Navy, represents a comprehensive initiative aimed at bolstering Italy’s maritime defense capabilities. This ambitious programme includes the development and production of four state-of-the-art submarines, as well as extensive in-service support to ensure their operational readiness. Central to this effort is the integration of advanced technologies, including a cutting-edge lithium-ion battery system and the establishment of a modern training center to enhance the skill set of naval personnel.

The recent steel cutting ceremony for the third NFS submarine is a significant milestone in this journey. The construction of this submarine is scheduled for completion and delivery to the Italian Navy by the end of 2032. This event not only signifies the physical beginning of the submarine’s creation but also embodies Italy’s dedication to strengthening its naval capabilities and contributing to global maritime security.

Just prior to the steel cutting ceremony, another notable achievement was realized: the signing of the fourth amendment to the NFS contract. This amendment activates the NFS 4 Optional Package, ensuring the progression of the programme and incorporating an upgrade to the battery system. This upgrade transitions the submarines from traditional battery technology to a state-of-the-art lithium battery system, starting with the first of the class. This advancement is set to enhance the performance, efficiency, and endurance of the NFS submarines, placing them at the forefront of naval innovation.

Fincantieri’s role in this programme highlights its expertise and leadership in naval shipbuilding. The company, renowned for its advanced engineering and technological capabilities, is pivotal in bringing these sophisticated submarines to fruition. The U212NFS submarines are expected to significantly enhance Italy’s underwater operational capabilities, providing a formidable deterrent and ensuring the nation’s maritime security for decades to come.

The collaboration between Fincantieri, the Italian Navy, and OCCAR exemplifies a strategic partnership focused on achieving excellence in naval defense. As construction progresses, the anticipation for the completion of the third submarine builds, with expectations that it will set new standards in submarine technology and operational effectiveness.

The successful implementation of the U212 NFS Programme is a testament to the vision and commitment of all parties involved. As Italy continues to invest in its naval infrastructure, the advancements brought forth by this programme will undoubtedly play a crucial role in maintaining the nation’s strategic and security interests on the global stage.
