EvoLogics Unveils Next-Gen Quadroin Underwater Robot

Defense News ,Europe :-  EvoLogics, a company based in Berlin, has announced the release of an updated version of its Quadroin AUV, a type of underwater robot.

The Quadroin AUV first appeared in May 2021 and caught people's attention because of its unique design resembling a penguin. It was created for monitoring and surveying underwater environments. This robot is fast and easy to maneuver, thanks to EvoLogics' expertise in making robots that move through water with little resistance. Dr. Rudolf Bannasch, the founder of EvoLogics, spent many years studying how penguins move in water, which inspired the design of the Quadroin. Its streamlined shape allows it to reach speeds of up to 10 knots while using minimal energy.

The initial versions of the Quadroin were developed in partnership with Hereon for the Helmholtz Association’s MOSES initiative. These robots were primarily used to study ocean eddies and gather data about things like temperature, pressure, oxygen levels, and water clarity at different depths.

The new Quadroin has been upgraded with more features. It now includes a side-scan sonar for creating images of the seafloor using sound waves. It also has two high-definition underwater cameras—one facing forward at a 45-degree angle and one facing downward—equipped with adjustable LED lights to help see underwater.

One of the most exciting additions to the new Quadroin is its AI-powered object recognition system. This system can identify objects in the images from the side-scan sonar and cameras in real-time. It can even help the robot avoid collisions using a sonar system that looks ahead. The hardware and propulsion systems have also been improved with better components for superior performance. The Quadroin now uses the Nortek Nucleus1000, a subsea navigation system that combines advanced DVL technology with other sensors to ensure precise control.

EvoLogics has released a new video showcasing the Quadroin in action, filmed at Kreidesee Lake in Hemmoor, Germany, in late 2023. They will also be demonstrating the upgraded Quadroin at Oceanology International 2024 through live demonstrations.

EvoLogics has upgraded its Quadroin AUV with new features and improvements to make it even more effective for underwater exploration and research. The new Quadroin promises to be a valuable tool for scientists studying the ocean and marine life.
