DRDO Unveils Lightest Bulletproof Jacket for Highest Threat Level Protection
In a significant achievement, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has unveiled the lightest bulletproof jacket designed to offer protection against the highest threat level 6. Developed by the Defence Materials and Stores Research and Development Establishment (DMSRDE) in Kanpur, this innovative jacket marks a notable advancement in personal protective equipment (PPE) for defense personnel.
The newly developed bulletproof jacket has undergone rigorous testing at the Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory (TBRL) in Chandigarh, in accordance with BIS 17051-2018 standards. It has demonstrated exceptional resilience against 7.62 x 54 R API (Level 6 of BIS 17051) ammunition, a commonly encountered threat in combat situations.
A key feature of this jacket is its novel design approach, incorporating advanced materials and manufacturing processes. The front Hard Armour Panel (HAP) is engineered to withstand multiple hits (06 shots) of 7.62 x 54 R API (Sniper rounds) in both In-conjunction with (ICW) and Standalone configurations.
The ergonomic design of the front HAP, composed of a monolithic ceramic plate with polymer backing, not only ensures superior protection but also enhances wearer comfort and usability during operations. The areal density of the ICW and Standalone HAP is remarkably low, measuring less than 40 kg/m2 and 43 kg/m2 respectively.
Secretary Department of Defence R&D and Chairman DRDO have commended the efforts of DMSRDE in achieving this milestone. Their dedication and expertise have culminated in the development of a state-of-the-art bulletproof jacket that sets a new standard for lightweight protection against the most formidable threats faced by defense personnel.
With the introduction of this advanced PPE, DRDO continues to uphold its commitment to enhancing the safety and effectiveness of Indian armed forces. The deployment of the lightest bulletproof jacket reinforces the nation's defense capabilities, ensuring that personnel are equipped with cutting-edge equipment to mitigate risks in challenging environments.
