Canada Clears India of Election Meddling Allegations; China's Interference Confirmed
Canada recently concluded an official investigation into allegations of foreign meddling in its elections. The probe found no evidence of India attempting to influence Canadian politics during the 2021 elections. This conclusion came from a panel of senior Canadian officials tasked with monitoring the elections.
The investigation revealed that India refuted Canada's claims of interference. A poll official stated that there was no evidence of the Indian government using any tools to influence the campaign. However, the Canadian intelligence agency did find evidence of China interfering in the last two Canadian elections, as testified during the probe.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Liberal Party won both the 2019 and 2021 elections. Amid concerns raised by opposition legislators regarding media reports of China's possible involvement, Trudeau initiated a commission to investigate foreign interference. Trudeau himself is set to testify before the probe panel.
India had previously denied allegations of interference in Canadian elections and reaffirmed its commitment to non-interference in other countries' democratic processes. The Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesperson emphasized India's stance, rejecting the baseless allegations and highlighting Canada's history of interference in Indian affairs.
This investigation has further strained relations between Canada and India. Previous allegations by Trudeau regarding Indian involvement in the killing of a Khalistani terrorist on Canadian soil have exacerbated tensions between the two nations, resulting in diplomatic repercussions.
