BAE Systems and Chess Dynamics Partner on Advanced Tridon Mk2 Air Defense System

In a significant move to bolster global air defense capabilities, BAE Systems Bofors has joined forces with UK-based Chess Dynamics to develop the fire control element for the cutting-edge Tridon Mk2 air defense system. This collaboration, unveiled in June, promises to enhance the effectiveness of countering diverse threats, including drones, aircraft, cruise missiles, and armored vehicles.

The Tridon Mk2 is built around the robust Bofors 40-millimeter anti-aircraft artillery gun, known for its versatility and efficiency. This self-propelled, remotely-controlled gun boasts an impressive effective range of 12 kilometers (7.4 miles) and can be mounted on various platforms, making it a flexible solution for modern defense needs.

Central to the Tridon Mk2’s capabilities is its advanced fire control system, developed by Chess Dynamics. The system is based on the Hawkeye Air Defence system, a proven technology in both land and maritime domains. The Mk2 fire control system provides an integrated solution for all types of ballistic effectors, ensuring precise targeting and tracking.

The fire control system features a high-definition thermal imager, daylight TV sensors, and a high-performance laser range finder, all co-mounted on a dynamic direct-drive positioner. This sophisticated setup allows for accurate 3-D coordinates of both air and surface targets, feeding critical data to gun control or combat systems. The in-built tracker ensures that the system maintains a lock on targets even under challenging conditions.
