Australia pledges $100 million defence aid package to Ukraine, including RBS 70 NG air defence systems and drones, bolstering Ukraine's security capabilities.

During a recent visit to Lviv, Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles confirmed Australia's commitment to providing Ukraine with a significant defence aid package valued at USD 100 million. This package includes the transfer of short-range RBS 70 NG air defence systems from the Australian Army, with an estimated value of around USD 50 million.

Additionally, the aid package earmarks USD 32.5 million for the procurement of drones, as part of a broader initiative supported by the United Kingdom and Latvia. The assistance also encompasses various essential equipment for soldiers, such as helmets, boots, generators, and rigid inflatable boats.

Although specific details regarding the exact number of RBS 70 NG launchers and munitions to be delivered, as well as the inclusion of items like the Giraffe AMB air defense radars from Swedish company Saab, have not been disclosed, the aid package marks a significant step in bolstering Ukraine's defence capabilities.

The RBS 70 NG system, developed by Sweden’s Saab in 2011, represents an advanced variant of the RBS 70 air defence system. It possesses the capability to engage various air targets, including drones, helicopters, and aircraft, utilizing laser-guided missiles, even during day and night conditions. With a maximum range of 8,000 to 9,000 meters and the ability to reach altitudes of up to 5,000 meters, the system boasts enhancements such as an improved targeting system, integration with a thermal camera, automatic target tracking, and simplified operator training.

Australia's commitment to providing this substantial defence aid package underscores its solidarity with Ukraine and its efforts to enhance the country's defence capabilities against evolving threats. The collaboration between nations in supporting Ukraine reflects a collective commitment to promoting security and stability in the region.
