Any instability in Afghanistan threat to whole region: Deputy NSA Vikram Misri

Defense News ,India :- India's Deputy National Security Advisor, Vikram Misri, delivered a strong message on Friday, emphasizing that Afghan territory must not serve as a training ground or shelter for terrorists, including groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM). Speaking at a conclave in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, Misri highlighted the potential threat to the entire region if instability persists in Afghanistan.

Addressing immediate priorities for Afghanistan, Misri outlined India's commitment to providing humanitarian assistance, supporting the formation of an inclusive government, tackling terrorism and drug trafficking, and safeguarding the rights of women, children, and minorities. India, yet to recognize the Taliban setup in Afghanistan, advocates for a truly inclusive government in Kabul.

Misri extended an invitation to Central Asian countries to leverage the Chabahar port and Shaheed Bahesti terminal for maritime trade. He urged the inclusion of the Chabahar port in the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) framework, emphasizing the need to make it a reality. The INSTC is a multi-mode transport project connecting India, Iran, Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Russia, Central Asia, and Europe.

Recognizing the importance of creating economic opportunities and empowering the Afghan people, Misri stressed India's commitment to rebuilding Afghanistan's economy. Trade relations between India and Afghanistan continue, with tariff concessions under the South Asian Free Trade Area (SAFTA) extended to Afghan traders.

To address the challenges posed by drug trafficking, Misri described recent large-scale drug seizures as a worrisome trend. He highlighted India's partnership with the United Nations' Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to provide humanitarian assistance, including hygiene kits, baby-food kits, blankets, and medical aid to women benefiting from drug rehabilitation programs in Afghanistan.

Misri underscored India's consistent policy in support of peace, security, and stability in Afghanistan, emphasizing India's legitimate economic and security interests as a contiguous neighbor. He expressed concern about the use of Afghan territory for sheltering, training, planning, or financing terrorist acts, aligning with the collective approach articulated in the UN Security Council Resolution 2593.

As part of India's historic and civilisational ties with the Afghan people dating back centuries, Misri concluded by highlighting India's role in hosting the third regional security dialogue on Afghanistan in November 2021. The regional security dialogue involves secretaries and National Security Advisors (NSAs) from Iran, India, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, China, Turkmenistan, and Pakistan.
